Born in 1978, Roland studied at Edinburgh College of Art graduating in 2000 with a BA in Fine Art. Following his graduation he was awarded The New York Academy of Arts Merit Scholarship.
Roland's subjects are principally the landscape and coast of Scotland and wildlife. An early influence on his landscape paintings was Cezanne, Roland has now moved away from this structured approach. He is influenced by both the Scottish colourists and the Canadian Group of Seven with their approach of working directly from the landscape. The contemporary artist Peter Doig has influenced Roland's watercolour pictures. His choice of subjects incorporate his interest in pattern, and brings his appreciation of light and colour to the fore. He enjoys working in a variety of media.
Roland has won numerous prestigious awards and has had work selected for National open competitions including; The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition and Royal Institute in Painters in Watercolour Exhibition, Mall Galleries. His work is in numerous private collections worldwide including Hong Kong, New Zealand, Montenegro, U.S.A. and the U.K. Public collections include Edinburgh College of Art (University of Edinburgh) and the Royal Scottish Academy of Art & Architecture.
